County Council chairman Bill "Kaipo" Asing will be sworn in as Kaua'i mayor July 17 at 9 a.m. in the rotunda of the Moikeha Building at the Lihu'e Civic Center.

Asing will resign his position on the County Council before the ceremony. Asing was unanimously selected Monday by the council to succeed the late Bryan J. Baptiste as mayor.

Asing will serve as mayor until Dec. 1 when a new mayor elected by voters in a special election will be sworn in.

Gary Heu will continue to serve as acting mayor until Asing is sworn in.
