Rainbow Wahine volleyball recruiting class ranked 16th

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team's recruiting class was rated 16th nationally by PrepVolleyball.com.

The top 30 recruiting classes, released today, had Florida first, followed by Texas, Cal, UCLA and USC.

The Rainbow Wahine, 27-6 last season, welcome recruits Kanani Herring and Brittany Hewitt into the upcoming season. Herring, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter out of Kamehameha, was a three-time Advertiser State Player of the Year and was Volleyball Magazine's High School Player of the Year in 2007. She also won this spring's state high jump championship during her first year of competition.

Hewitt, a 6-3 middle blocker, led Eagle High School to back-to-back Idaho state titles.

PrepVolleyball.com is considered to be a leading source for high school volleyball news and a national panel of college coaches helped determine the list. Transfers were not included in the rankings.

Other Hawai'i recruits listed were Punahou graduate Sydney Yogi (Texas, No. 2), 'Iolani graduate Lauren Minkel (Long Beach State, No. 10), Punahou's Diana Hiromoto (Loyola Marymount, highest honorable mention), Kamehameha's Jordan Meredith (Boston College, honorable mention) and Word of Life graduate Chanteal Satele (St. Mary's, honorable mention).

Western Athletic Conference teams New Mexico State (high honorable mention), Boise State (honorable mention) and Fresno State (honorable mention) also had their recruiting classes recognized.

Hawai'i opens it season on Aug. 29 against defending national champion Penn State in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic.
