31 UH student-athletes earn WAC all-academic honors

Thirty-one University of Hawai'i student-athletes have received fall all-academic honors from the Western Athletic Conference.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.
The UH athletes to receive the honor were:
Cross country — Chantelle Wilder. Football — Solomon Elimimian, David Farmer, Guyton Galdeira, Timothy Grasso, C.J. Hawthorne, Tyson Kafentzis, Karl Noa, Kealoha Pilares, Amani Purcell, Rustin Saole, Spencer Smith, David Veikune, Andrew Watson, Leon Wright-Jackson. Soccer — Ambree Ako, Larilyn Alota, Jessica Domingo, Taryn Fukuroku, Tehane Higa, Kelsie Look, Kristen Oshiro, Koren Takeyama, Lehua Wood. Volleyball — Stephanie Brandt, Kari Gregory, Tara Hittle, Amber Kaufman, Jessica Keefe, Jayme Lee, Aneli Otineru.

LU, FUJIWARA TRIUMPH
Sixth-seeded Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan defeated second-seeded Vince Spadea of the United States, 6-2, 6-0, yesterday in the men's final of the USTA Waikoloa Challenger at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island.
Lu won $5,000 and 55 ATP ranking points.
In the women's final, unseeded Rika Fujiwara of Japan rallied past seventh-seeded Sandra Kloesel of Germany, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Fujiwara earned $7,700 and 35 WTA ranking points.
TRACK AND FIELD
WEAVER SETS UH MARK
Senior Meghan Weaver heaved the shot 51 feet, 7 1/4 inches Saturday to beat her personal and school-best marks at the University of Hawai'i's first Sunset Meet of the season.
Weaver's previous best was 50-7, which she set in the 2006 season.
Junior Thalia Amanakis won the 60-meter hurdles (8.6 seconds), and the 60- (7.5 seconds), 300- (42.3 seconds), and 600-meter (1 minute, 40.3 seconds) events.
Senior Mallory Gilbert won the high jump (5-8) and long jump (18-9 1/4).
"It was a great start to our season," UH head coach Carmyn James said. "There were lots of personal bests, big performances, and we're looking pretty good heading to Seattle (for the University of Washington Invitational) this weekend."
