State workers this weekend will remove some of the memorial material left on a pedestrian overpass for Cyrus Belt, the toddler thrown to his death on H-1 Freeway last week.

The workers will clear only loose flowers, wreaths and other material that are causing a traffic hazard from the overpass, Transportation Department spokesman Scott Ishikawa said.

Other memorial items will be allowed to remain.

Officials also asked people who still want to place flowers, toys or other offerings at the site to leave them on the mauka side of the overpass.

SCHOOL FIRE MAY HAVE BEEN ARSON

Hawai'i County police have opened an arson investigation in connection with a fire Sunday at a new library building under construction at Kealakehe Intermediate School.

Police Lt. Robert Wagner said there was smoke damage throughout the building. The fire started in a small room, and the concrete walls and fire-retardant ceiling material prevented the fire from spreading, he said.

PIPE CLOG CAUSES SEWAGE SPILL

City crews responded to a sewage spill yesterday morning in Palolo after a clogged pipe backed up. Workers with the Environmental Services Department responded to an 8:14 a.m. call.

The crew arrived on the scene at 9:03 a.m. and secured the site one hour and 23 minutes later, the city said.

The spill happened at 2201 Ahe Place when a 12-inch PVC pipe became clogged with roots and rags, causing 2,640 gallons of sewage to spill out and run off into Palolo Stream.

The crew cleaned and deodorized the affected area. The Department of Health was notified and signs were posted. The state Environmental Quality Division took water samples from the stream.

EXPECT CLOSURES FOR LIKELIKE WORK

Work on Likelike Highway next week will shut down some Kane'ohe-bound lanes during the day.

The work runs Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The state advised motorists to expect single-lane closures from King Street to Emmeline Place for lane striping and pavement marker installations. Crews also will close the right lane near Valley View Drive for roadside tree-trimming.
