The McKinley JV girls basketball team abruptly forfeited its O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference showdown at Campbell last night at the request of head coach Myles Komatsu, despite the Tigers leading 30-18 with 1:52 remaining in the third period.
Both teams reportedly entered the game unbeaten in OIA play.
In Campbell athletic director/site manager Sam Delos Reyes' "citizenship report" submitted to the OIA, he noted that Komatsu requested the forfeit "for the safety of all players." Delos Reyes said each team lost a starter to injury during the game, and Komatsu apparently objected to numerous fouls not being called.
Komatsu could not be reached for comment.
"(Komatsu) told the referee he wanted to take a forfeit, and the official gave him a timeout to think about it," Delos Reyes said. "But after the timeout, he still wanted to take the forfeit, so the referee called the game at that point."
Delos Reyes, a former OIA referee who first started officiating games in 1969, said he had never seen the coach of a team that is leading request a forfeit.
Delos Reyes' report was submitted to OIA girls basketball coordinator Mel Imai and OIA executive director Dwight Toyama, and a copy also will likely be forwarded to OIA officials commissioner Luis Fuentes.
But as of now, Delos Reyes said, the game will be recorded as a Campbell victory by forfeit, with the score 2-0.
