Forum will look at scholarships

Windward Community College will hold a Scholarship 'Aha on Jan. 31 to provide students and parents an opportunity to discuss financial aid and scholarship options with financial aid advisers.

The gathering from 6 to 8 p.m. will allow students and their parents to meet with scholarship representatives and attend workshops that help with the financial aid process.

TWO ISLAND STUDENTS DELEGATES TO D.C.

Two Hawai'i students have been selected as delegates to the 46th annual U.S. Senate Youth Program that will be held March 1 to 8 in Washington, D.C.

Jonathan Gates of Kaimuki High School and Alexia Kwok of McKinley High School were chosen from hundreds of applicants to be part of the group of 104 student delegates who will attend this year's program.

In addition to the program week, the foundation grants each of the student delegates a $5,000 college scholarship with encouragement to continue coursework in government, history and public affairs.

Gates is vice president of the Honolulu District Student Council. He has served as a legislative intern for state Rep. Brian Schatz.

Kwok is president of the Honolulu District Student Council and president of the student council at McKinley.

U.S. ASTRONAUT WILL VISIT HAWAI'I

NASA astronaut Barbara Morgan, a mission specialist aboard Endeavour space shuttle during its 2007 flight to the International Space Station, will visit Hawai'i Jan. 25 to 31. Morgan will give a firsthand account of her recent mission and her experiences as an astronaut.

Morgan's visit to Hawai'i begins in Hilo. She also will make appearances in Kailua, Kona and Honolulu.

Her visit will conclude with a presentation at the Challenger Learning Center in Kapolei.

A schedule of the events:

  • Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Science Day at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo.

  • Sunday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Space Center in Kailua, Kona.

  • Monday, 9:30 to 11 a.m., Konawaena High in Kealakekua.

  • Monday, 1 to 2:30 p.m., Hualalai Academy in Kailua, Kona.

  • Tuesday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Rotary Club of Honolulu Luncheon at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

  • Wednesday, 9 to 10:45 a.m., Moanalua High School in Honolulu.

  • Jan. 31, 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m., Challenger Learning Center Hawaii in Kapolei.
