Ex-big leaguer Rhoden in Turtle Bay golf field

Former major league pitcher Rick Rhoden was among 13 golfers to earn berths in the Turtle Bay Championships yesterday in qualifying at the Turtle Bay Resorts' George Fazio Course.

A field of 44 professionals competed for 13 spots in the $1.6 million Champions Tour tournament, which starts Friday at Turtle Bay's Arnold Palmer Course.

Rhoden, who played for the Dodgers, Pirates, Yankees and Astros in a 16-year career that ended in 1989, shot a 4-under-par 68 to finish second in the qualifier.

Champions Tour member Jim Woodward led with a 67.

Also qualifying were: Mike Donald (69), Ron Streck (69), Michael Goodes (69), Richard Karbowski (70), Boonchu Ruangkit (70), Roy Vucinich (70), Mitch Adams (71), Mitch Adcock (71), Dick Mast (71), Donnie Hammond (71) and Robert Thompson (71).

AMANAKIS WINS TWO

University of Hawai'i junior Thalia Amanakis won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.1 seconds and the 800-meter dash in 2 minutes, 20.45 seconds yesterday as the Rainbow Wahine opened their indoor season at the Run for the Dream meet in Fresno, Calif.

Junior Emily Sheppard won the high jump at 5-8 3/4, and junior Jessica Custance captured the pole vault with 12-1 1/2.

In the dual scoring system, UH beat Cal State Stanislaus, 81-44, but lost to Cal Poly, 68-64, and Fresno State, 71-60.

LAJOLA GETS WAC HONOR

University of Hawai'i freshman Dennis Lajola has been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week.

Lajola beat Florida State's Sam Chang, 7-5, 6-3, and UC Santa Barbara's Bijan Hejazi, 7-6, 6-4, last week.
