Thirteen years after his family moved from Brazil to O'ahu's North Shore, Kiron Jabour is making his move up the surfing ranks.

Jabour won the No Fear/Hard Rock Cafe Koastal Kaos Junior Pro yesterday at Sunset Beach.

The final day of the two-day contest was run in wave-face heights that ranged from 10 to 20 feet — some of the biggest ever for a junior pro contest.

"This is prime Sunset — perfect, pumping Sunset," Jabour said. "It's the biggest waves I ever surfed for a contest."

Junior pro events are for surfers age 20 and younger, professional or amateur.

Jabour, who is 17 and a home-schooled senior, topped a field that featured most of Hawai'i's top up-and-coming surfers.

"For sure the biggest win of my life," he said.

Joao Jabour, Kiron's father, moved the family from Brazil 13 years ago so he could surf in Hawai'i's famous waves. Kiron and his brother, Kailani, started surfing with their father almost immediately after stepping off the plane from Brazil.

"We surf all over the North Shore," Joao said. "(Kiron) even surfs Waimea Bay, so I wasn't nervous about him going out today. I knew he could do it."

In the four-man final, Kiron received scores of 7.5 and 6.25 on his two best waves for a total of 13.75.

"I try to surf here when ever there's a swell," he said. "So it helped me a lot to know the lineup a little bit."

Kiron received $2,000 for the victory. "He won the money, so he can keep it," his father said.

Tyler Newton of Kaua'i placed a close second with a two-wave total of 13.35.

It was his second impressive showing in a North Shore contest this month. Last week, he beat several top big-wave surfers to place seventh at the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout.

"This might have been the best junior contest ever," said Newton, 17 and a home-schooled senior. "I was getting pounded. My body is sore from this whole day."

Brazil surfers Jeronimo Vargas and Marco Giorgi placed third and fourth, respectively.
