The U.S. Postal Service yesterday said none of the mail recovered from Monday's crash of a mail cargo flight off Kaua'i will be delivered, because of water damage or contamination by aviation fuel.

Recovery personnel found about 25 percent of the 4,200 pounds of mail on the Alpine Air flight, Postal Service spokesman Duke Gonzales said. Most of the mail items on the plane were parcels or large envelopes sent via Priority Mail.

The Postal Service pays loss or damage claims when items are mailed via insured, registered, COD or Express Mail services. Customers who believe they have a claim may go to a post office and file a Form 1000 claim requesting reimbursement.

People expecting mail that is not eligible for a claim should wait several days for delivery, then contact the sender if the anticipated mail is not received.
