Young Hawaii musicians on NPR today

Advertiser Staff

Tune your radio to KHPR 88.1 FM at 10 a.m. today to hear talented young classical performers on National Public Radio's "From the Top" program. The show also can be heard on KKUA 90.7 in Wailuku and KANO 91.1 in Hilo.

Two shows — one at the Hawai'i Theatre, the other at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center — were recorded in November. The O'ahu show will be heard today; the Maui show will be broadcast at 10 a.m. Jan. 26 on the same channels.

Today's show includes performances by Hawai'i's own Asia Doike on violin, Irwin Jiang on piano and Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus' Na Leo Kuho'okahi ensemble. Also Ibanda Ruhumbika, tuba, of Athens, Ga., and Melissa Hooper, oboe, of Portland, Texas.

The Jan. 26 program includes Hawai'i's Jacob DeForest on piano, Kiyoe Wellington on double bass, and two sets of five pianists, students of Ellen Masaki. Also Kaori Matsui, violin, of Cincinnati, and Joseph Lee, guitar, of Bedford, Texas.
