HawTel makes retirement offer

Hawaiian Telcom has offered an early retirement incentive package to 55 employees working under certain specified job titles, based on business needs. Within those job categories, only employees age 55 or older with 25 or more years of service, or age 60 or older with five or more years of service, are eligible.
The company has asked eligible employees to make their decision by Jan. 25. Those who accept will retire on Feb. 1.
"The voluntary retirement incentive offer is a part of the company's realignment effort announced this past October, that addresses cost structure," said chief executive Mike Ruley. "We see this as a positive step in our strategic plan to improve our financial and operational performance."
HAGADONE NAMED A BEST WORKPLACE
Honolulu-based Hagadone Printing Co. has been designated one of the "best workplaces in the Americas" by the Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation.
This is the eighth year of the Best Workplace in the Americas program, which honors printing companies that provide a superior work environment.
Applicants were judged on eight criteria: management practices; work environment; training and development opportunities; financial security; workplace health and safety; work-life balance; recognition and rewards; and health and wellness programs.
"It's an honor to be recognized by the industry as a company that offers a superior workplace," said Erwin Hudelist, Hagadone president.
DEFRIES TO SPEAK ON DEVELOPMENT
John DeFries, president and chief executive of the Hokuli'a development on the Big Island and founder of Native Sun Business Group, will be the featured speaker at the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce's luncheon meeting Thursday.
De Fries' presentation will focus on bridging the gaps between developers and communities through responsible and responsive development.
Registration and networking will begin at 11:30 a.m., with lunch and the program starting at noon, at 1451 Queen Emma St. Cost is $25 general and $20 for members.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS OPEN
The Environmental Protection Agency is soliciting nominations from Hawai'i and other western states for its annual Environmental Awards program.
The program recognizes individuals and groups outside of the EPA who made significant contributions to improve the environment in 2007. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 17.

TAHITI CONNECTION DEAL SIGNED
Alcatel-Lucent said it has signed a turnkey contract with Office des Postes & Telecommunications, a French Polynesia telecommunications provider, for a $106.7 million high-speed submarine cable network linking Tahiti and Hawai'i.
The new network will increase French Polynesia's local and international connectivity and is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
