Chelsie Swann's ability to create is paying off for the Kapolei High School girls soccer team.
Swann leads the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West with 15 goals and had the game's lone goal in a key win over Mililani on Wednesday.
Kapolei, having one of its best seasons ever, heads into a key West match at Pearl City today.
Pearl City leads the West with a 10-0-1 record, followed by Kapolei (8-1-1) and Mililani (7-3-0). Kapolei has another match later this week against Leilehua, which was rescheduled from last week.
"She's a player with the ability to find the goal," Kapolei coach Brian Beck said. "She has a remarkable way of finding the goal, whether her back is on the goal, from side on, we can play the ball to her in a variety of ways."
Swann worked on being more offensive-minded over the summer. While she still found the goal last year, she played mostly up top, waiting for players to come up before passing the ball.
"We worked on creating one-on-one, turning and how accurate you can be," Beck said.
Swann, who told Beck she wanted to score two goals per game this year, is just one of the offensive threats for the Hurricanes. Liana Gualdarama has nine goals, Kristina Behrens has eight and Kirsten Otsuka, who Swann said is one of the best passers on the team and assisted on the goal in the Mililani game, has six goals.
All of that has the team on the road to accomplishing one of the goals it set for this season: doing something it has never done before. That includes finishing in the top two in the league.
"Last year we had the best season in our program's short history," Beck said. "It's hard to top that but we have a different team dynamic this year."
Pearl City and Kapolei played to a scoreless tie during their last meeting. Beck said Pearl City is a tough place to play, but his team is confident in its style of play.
Meghan Fuller leads the Chargers with 12 goals this season. Tricia Miura has nine goals, Bethany Gallarde has eight and Christina Saturnio has six.
