Work will begin today on a Kahekili Highway beautification project seven years in the making.
The $4 million project includes the installation of landscaped planter boxes on the median divider, 19 roadside vine planter boxes, construction of accessible curb ramps and the resurfacing of Kahekili Highway lanes between Kuluke'oe Street and Ha'iku Road in Kane'ohe.
Work is expected to take about a year, the state Department of Transportation said.
Single lane closures on Kahekili are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. this week through Friday.
The project was conceived in 2001 but was delayed by a lack of money and other problems.
