'Iolani's Dayna Jandoc, left, and Punahou's Dara Tompkison collided while scrambling for a loose ball near midcourt during the first quarter of last night's Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I game. Jandoc was shaken up and missed the final few minutes of the quarter.

Punahou School's girls basketball team proved again last night it has more weapons than Shawna-Lei and Shaena-Lyn Kuehu.

With the All-State caliber senior twins fighting foul trouble and a third scoring threat — junior guard Janelle Nomura — sitting out with a right ankle injury, the Buffanblu withstood 27 points from 'Iolani's Jamie Smith and held off the arch rival Raiders, 48-38, before a crowd of about 400 at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

Punahou improved to 3-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu; defending champion 'Iolani fell to 2-1.

Nomura, a 5-foot-4 junior point guard, was impressive against top Mainland competition at the 'Iolani Prep Classic and Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, but suffered a slight fracture in her right ankle in the last of four games at Arizona.

She wore her game jersey last night but did not play.

"She's walking on it, and hopefully she'll be jogging within a week," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said.

The Buffanblu showed little ill effects of Nomura's absence last night, thanks in large part to junior guard Becca Lau — previously known more for her defense. Lau finished with 11 points, including eight in the first quarter.

She got things started with a 3-pointer two minutes into the game, scored on a fast break layup midway through the quarter and then swished another 3-pointer to finish a 7-0 run that put Punahou up 14-6.

"My role is normally defense, but I'll do whatever I have to whether it's scoring or whatever," Lau said. "Janelle brings us a lot of energy and she attacks the basket. But we had other people step up today."

Shooting guard Dara Tompkison opened the second period with a 3-pointer and sophomore reserve Ashley Satterwhite added a 12-foot jumper to make it 19-6 midway through the quarter.

Smith, a 6-foot center who finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and one steal, sank two free throws just before halftime to cut it to 25-16.

Shawna-Lei Kuehu opened the second half with a 3-pointer, and the Buffanblu stretched the lead to 38-23 before Smith sank another two free throws at the end of the period.

Tressa Torres' layup to open the fourth quarter made it 40-25, but Smith answered with a layup to start a 13-2 run capped by Chanel Hirata's 3-pointer that closed it to 42-38 with 1:42 left.

But Shawna-Lei Kuehu, who picked up her fourth foul with 2:22 remaining, sank five of six free throws and Tompkison added another to seal the victory.

Shawna-Lei Kuehu finished with 15 points, including 11 in the second half. Shaena-Lyn Kuehu picked up her fourth foul with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter and finished with two points.

"They were short-handed, but their other players picked up the slack and made a lot of shots," Raiders coach Glenn Takara said.
