A surfer brought to shore unconscious yesterday at the "Sylva's Channel" surf spot in Mokule'ia died at Wahiawa General Hospital.

Honolulu Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic confirmed the death.

Fire department crews responded to a surfer-in-distress call at 3:15 p.m. and the surfer was already on shore with CPR being performed when units arrived, said HFD spokesman Capt. Earle Kealoha.

MAN INDICTED IN HIGH-RISE ATTACK

A 42-year-old Mainland man has been indicted on charges of attempting to murder a security guard by pushing him out a window on the 26th floor of a University Avenue condominium.

Joseph R. Joyce, who has no local address, was also indicted on charges of attempted burglary of a condo unit in the same building, attempted assault of a condo resident and terroristic threatening.

He was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail pending trial.

Joyce allegedly pushed security guard John Lopis, 63, into a window pane Friday afternoon after Lopis confronted him in a hallway of the building. The window shattered and Lopis fell through the opening, holding onto the window frame and dangling 26 floors above the street.

Joyce is also charged with the attempted assault of Pierre Jaffuel, 77, a resident on the floor who had come out of his unit to investigate loud noises in the hallway.

Joyce also allegedly threatened Jaffuel.

He's also charged with attempted burglary of another man's residence on the same floor.

WATER MAIN BREAK CUTS OFF SERVICE

A water main break on University Avenue yesterday cut off service to residents in 10 nearby apartment buildings and slowed traffic in the area.

The eight-inch water main break was reported at 5:43 p.m., Board of Water Supply spokeswoman Moani Wright-Van Alst said. Two makai lanes of University Avenue between South King and Date streets were closed and traffic was contraflowed on the mauka-bound lanes.

Wright-Van Alst had no estimated time for how long repairs would take.

ALCOHOL, SPEEDING, SUSPECTED IN CRASH

A 56-year-old man injured in a one-car crash Monday on the H-2 Freeway near the Ka Uka Boulevard overpass in Waipi'o was in critical condition yesterday at The Queen's Medical Center, police said.

Police Sgt. Lorenzo Ridella said the crash happened at 6:05 p.m. on the H-2 Freeway south-bound lanes, one-quarter mile before the Wai'anae offramp.

The driver apparently lost control of his 2003 Nissan Altima, which hit a concrete barrier and rebounded back onto the freeway. No one else was in the car, Ridella said.

An open alcohol container was in the car. Excessive speed is also believed to be a factor.

WOMAN, 47, DIES IN HILO POLICE CELL

A 47-year-old Hilo woman died yesterday while in police custody on the Big Island.

Ann Marie Lewis was found unresponsive in a cell at the Hilo police cellblock about 8:45 a.m. Fire rescue personnel were immediately summoned, but she could not be revived, police said.

Lewis was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 11:10 a.m.

Lewis had been taken into police custody at 10:53 p.m. Monday after her release from Hilo Medical Center. She was arrested on two outstanding warrants issued for revocation of her probation, and she was unable to post $100,000 bail, police said.

Police are investigating Lewis' death. An autopsy has been scheduled.
