Mason, Kono top Hilo golf tourney
Advertiser Staff
Professional Nick Mason won the tournament, but amateur Stephanie Kono stole the show yesterday at the 11th Hilo Invitational at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course.
Mason, who won the event as an amateur in 2004, followed up his course-record-tying 63 Saturday with a 3-under-par 68 to beat runner-up Jacob Low (68—137) by six strokes.
Unlike her male counterparts who played from the championship tees, Kono played from the middle markers but the Punahou School senior still finished third with 71—139. She finished as the top amateur, and beat such noted professionals as Kevin Hayashi (142, tie for fourth), David Ishii (144, tie for eighth) and Casey Nakama (147, tie for 16th).
BASEBALL
HILO, KANSAS SPLIT
Michael Higa had two hits and scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Hawai'i-Hilo edged Kansas, 4-3, yesterday in the first game of a baseball doubleheader at Simmons' Field in Kailua, Kona.
The Jayhawks (2-3) clobbered the Vulcans (4-4), 16-4, in a seven-inning second game.
Higa, who singled with one out and took second on a groundout, scored on an error by third baseman Tony Thompson in the opener.
Emil DeAndreis worked the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit while striking out four and walking one, to earn the victory. He stranded runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth.
Hilo starter Brian Shannon worked 5 1/3 effective innings, spacing six hits while striking out six, walking one and allowing three unearned runs in the fourth after retiring the first two batters.
In the second game, Joe Southers batted 4 for 4, Preston Land hit a three-run homer and Justin Ellrich added a two-run shot to power the Jayhawks.
Ronel Trias had two hits and an RBI for the Vulcans.
