The University of Hawai'i volleyball team overcame its erratic passing to outlast Pacific, 30-28, 30-25, 17-30, 30-21, last night in the Spanos Center.

Despite being aced 14 times, including six by outside hitter Pekka Seppanen, the Warriors beat the Tigers for the 20th consecutive time. The Warriors have not lost in Stockton, Calif., since 1997.

"A victory, especially on the road, is a good thing," UH coach Mike Wilton said.

It did not come easily. The Warriors needed a 6-1 finish to rally from a 27-24 deficit in Game 1. They could do little right in Game 3.

One of the Warriors' leaders, Jim Clar, had eight kills (against two errors) and hit .333. But of the 21 serves he received, nine resulted in aces.

"It was a tough night," Wilton said. "Jimbo will be back in the lineup. He's a very good player."

Wilton summoned Nemanja Komar as Clar's replacement. Komar had seven kills (against one error) in 20 swings, solidifying his new role as the Warriors' "fireman." Komar can play all three outside positions.

"He played pretty well," Wilton said. "He came in and helped things."

While Seppanen was a threat behind the service line, he struggled with his accuracy. He offset his six aces with six service errors. And he had more attack errors (15) than kills (13).

The Warriors had 13.5 blocks, led by setter Sean Carney's nine rejections.

"We had some nice leads, and let them back in," Wilton said. "After what happened in Game 3, I was happy we were able to come back in Game 4."

Wilton said the Warriors were not bothered by the 8 p.m. start. A state high school wrestling tournament preceded the match.

"Everything was good," Wilton said.

The Warriors will practice today, then have voluntary workouts tomorrow. UH and Pacific meet in the rematch Monday.
