Moanalua boys forfeit third-place state tourney game

Advertiser Staff

The third-place game of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division I State Championships wasn't played today after Moanalua withdrew from the tournament because it used an ineligible player.

Moanalua was supposed to play Konawaena today at the Neal Blaisdell Arena at 4 p.m.

Moanalua beat Campbell on Wednesday and 'Iolani on Thursday, and lost to Kamehameha-Hawai'i on Friday in the semifinals.

"Moanalua was informed late yesterday afternoon (before its game with KS-Hawai'i) that they may have an ineligible player on the team," said HHSAA executive director Keith Amemiya.

The ineligible player competed in Na Menehune's first two tournament games, but was held out of Friday's game, according to Amemiya.

"Moanalua conducted its invetigation late yesterday and this morning, and concluded they had an ineligble player for the first two games," Amemiya said. "When the investigation was pending, they sat out the player last night against Kamehameha-Hawai'i."

'Iolani, which was upset by Moanalua 58-55, showed up late for its fifth-place game against Kamehameha yesterday afternoon. The game started at 2:45 p.m., about 30 minutes after the scheduled start.

" 'Iolani inquired to see if the tournament schedule could be altered," Amemiya said.
