UH swimmer, diver win at WAC

University of Hawai'i's Emma Berry won the 500-yard freestyle and fellow Rainbow Wahine sophomore Emma Friesen captured the 1-meter diving yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in San Antonio, Texas.

Berry, a transfer from Indiana, finished in 4 minutes, 54.71 seconds. Northern Arizona's Beck Triemstra was second in 4:59.61 and Nevada's Daniel Maddock third in 5:02.09.

Friesen, who is from Vancouver, British Columbia, won the diving event with 309.80 points for an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Nevada's Candic Minette was second with 297.90, followed by Northern Arizona's Danielle Borth with 297.30.

After two days of competition, Nevada remains in the lead with 246 points, followed by Northern Arizona (236) and Hawai'i (200). San Jose State is fourth with 192, followed by New Mexico State 171, Boise State 98, Idaho 94 and San Diego 91.


GOLF

UH TIED FOR 18TH

Host Hawai'i shot a 2-over 290 yesterday to finish the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in a tie for 18th at 6-over 582 at the Leilehua Golf Course.

Auburn leads the 21-school field with a 25-under total of 551. UNLV is second at 554 and Texas A&M third at 555.

California's Stephen Hale shot a 5-under 67 and San Diego State's Johan Carlsson a 68 to share individual honors at 10-under 134. UTEP's Herbert Day (67) and Arizona's Tarquin McManus (69) share third at 135.

UH's Kyle Waters is tied for 25th at 67—140.

The final round will be held today, starting at 8 a.m.


BOXING

ESCALANTE ON U.S. TEAM

Bruno Escalante Jr. of Waimanalo is part the 14-member United States team competing in two dual meets in Russia starting Sunday.

Escalante, 19, is ranked No. 5 in the flyweight (112 pounds) division by USA Boxing, and was a semifinalist at the 2007 Olympic Team Trials. He is participating in training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The USA team going to Russia includes 2008 Olympians and national team members. The duals are Sunday in Magnitogrosk and next Friday in Novosibirsk.

Escalante also is scheduled to be part of the Hawai'i team that will fight in the USA National Championships at Colorado Springs, March 8 to 16.

PUNAHOU RANKED 50TH

Four-time defending state champion Punahou is ranked 50th in the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Association preseason national high school poll, Baseball America Online reported.
