Incentive program does school proud

Where: 871 Lahainaluna Road, Lahaina, Maui

Grade span: 6th through 8th

Enrollment: 640 students, at capacity

Free and reduced-price lunch: 35 percent qualify for free and reduced-price meals

Special education students: 10.6 percent are English as Second Language Learners and 13 percent are special education students

Computers: Two computers in every classroom for student use; five wireless laptop carts with 18 laptops each and two computer labs, one with 30 computers and another with 18 computers

School colors: Royal blue and white

What are you most proud of? "Our Renaissance Program that is super effective," said Marsha Nakamura, the school's principal. "This is an incentive program that promotes good grades, good citizenship through behavior. Students give back to the community by completing four hours of community service per quarter."

What is your biggest challenge? "Our math scores are our biggest challenge right now," Nakamura said. "It is very difficult to find certified math teachers who are willing to live and work in Lahaina. Another challenge is bringing in parents to get involved with their children's education when their children need them most during these adolescent years."

Special events: Staff of the Month and Student of the Month, Renaissance Program, the 4.0 Club, Brought Up Grades Awards, Up Yours Awards (I Brought Up My grades, Up Yours), Value of the Month Students and Ai Do Kea (I Do What's Right).

History: The school was built in 1978. Students would go through eighth grade at King Kamehameha III Elementary School.
