Hawaiian adding 3rd Samoa flight

Hawaiian Airlines said it will add a third weekly flight to American Samoa this summer.

The state's largest airline said the third flight, which will be in service between May 27 and Aug. 26, will accommodate increased demand for travel to American Samoa.

Hawaiian said the new flight will leave Honolulu Tuesday at 5:05 p.m. and will arrive in Pago Pago at 9:30 p.m. that same night. The return flight will leave Pago Pago at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday and will arrive in Honolulu Wednesday at 5:30 a.m.


GRANT TO HELP UH DISABILITY STUDY

The NEC Foundation of America, a nonprofit endowed by NEC Corp., has given $53,000 to the University of Hawai'i's Center on Disability Studies.

The grant will help fund a pilot study determining the applicability and effectiveness of the remote accessibility assessment system for people with disabilities in underserved areas.


HPU ENTREPRENEURIAL SERIES SET

Hawai'i Pacific University will hold the first forum of its Entrepreneurial Series on Feb. 27 at the Plaza Club.

"The Entrepreneurial CEO" will run from 3-5 p.m. in the 20th-floor Plaza Club, 900 Fort Street Mall. Entrepreneurial leaders will share experiences of starting and growing a business.

The panel will include Eddie Flores, CEO of the L&L franchises, and Stephen Metter, CEO and principal of MW Group Ltd. and MW Commercial Realty Inc. The event will be moderated by Chuck Steilen, dean of HPU's College of Business Administration. For more information, call 687-7068.


MAINLAND FIRM TO BUY MAUI ENERGY

Maui Energy Co., a seller of small wind turbines on Maui, has agreed to be acquired by Vista International Technologies Inc., an Englewood, Colo.-based company focused on renewable energy.

Vista said it had agreed to acquire Maui Energy in a stock swap and to keep Maui Energy President Leo K. Caires in his current capacity. Vista said the acquisition will give it an entry point into the Hawai'i market.

"Disposal of municipal solid waste on the Islands has been a growing problem, and management feels that Vista International Technologies Thermal Gasifier technology presents an optimal solution in dealing with the limited landfill space," said Barry Kemble, Vista International chief executive officer, in a press statement.

Vista's shares were unchanged at 13 cents each yesterday.


SPRINT ADDS 25 NEW CELL SITES

Sprint said it has added 25 new cell sites in Hawai'i during the past year. The company said it has also enhanced mobile broadband coverage in the Islands by upgrading many of its existing cell sites.

"Sprint customers now have even greater access to wireless voice and data in Hawai'i — allowing instant access to their information," said Dale Goya, Sprint's general manager for Hawai'i.


PROSPECT ADDS TO JAPAN LAND STAKE

Prospect Asset Management Inc., the Honolulu-based investment firm, has increased its stake in Japanese property trust FC Residential Investment Co., Bloomberg News reported.

Prospected increased its holding to 45.6 percent from 44.0 percent as of Feb. 7, Bloomberg reported.
