TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"American Idol," 7 p.m., Fox. After a month of preliminaries, "Idol" finally chooses its 24 contestants. Fans will view that semi-skeptically. "Idol" has promised a year of strong singers, especially guys. So far, it's shown few signs of that. Mostly, judges approved people who looked great or had unusual backgrounds. Are there talented singers here? We'll start to see.

"African American Lives 2," 9 p.m., PBS. The Rev. Peter Gomes, a Harvard professor and clergyman at The Memorial Church, learns about his roots. In the first hour, he hears how his ancestors were freed in the late 1700s and supported by Quakers. In the second, he learns he may be descended from a Jew who left Portugal to avoid the Inquisition. Also traced are Henry Louis Gates (the show's host) and actor Morgan Freeman.

"America's Next Top Model, 7 p.m., CW/KHON, digital 93. Here's the second half of this special, viewing past quirks and highlights.

"Cupid's Funniest Moments," 7 p.m., MyNetwork TV. On the eve of Valentine's Day, we might as well settle back for clips from love gone wrong. This includes botched proposals and wedding bloopers.

"Big Brother," 7 p.m., CBS. Here's the second round of the reality show, which also airs on Tuesdays and Sundays.

"Breaking Bad," 8 p.m., AMC. In a change, AMC reruns the first three hours of this series. It's a good one, with a dying chemistry teacher (Bryan Cranston of "Malcolm in the Middle") taking a desperate step: starting a meth lab. The drama comes from an ordinary chap dealing with crooks. There is humor, agony and — late in the third episode — ferocity. That sets up the fourth episode, at 10 p.m. Sunday.

"Criminal Minds," 8 p.m., CBS. In this rerun, Frankie Muniz is a comic-book artist who helps track a serial killer.

"Law & Order: Criminal Intent," 8 p.m., NBC. A woman has been killed before she could testify in a rape case involving a football team.

"In Treatment," 7:30 p.m., HBO. Last Wednesday's episode (rerunning at 7 p.m.) had an extraordinary moment when Sophie, the angry teen gymnast, suddenly and silently hugged the wife of Paul, her therapist. Now she's back, with disturbing accounts of her parents' breakup and of her relationship with her coach.

"Law & Order," 9 p.m., NBC. After an immigration rally, a woman's body is found. The case stirs controversy as an outside prosecutor questions McCoy's liberal background.

"Cashmere Mafia," 9 p.m., ABC. Mia (Lucy Liu) hunts for a sex tape in the apartment of former fiance Jack.

"Project Runway," 10 p.m., Bravo, with reruns at 7 and 8 p.m. In a key week, one person will be eliminated and the others will be sent home to prepare Fashion Week designs.
