Preps: Lahainaluna, Seabury swim to MIL titles

By Robert Collias
The Maui News

KIHEI, Maui — Tom Popdan came dressed for the occasion.

Then, from the first to last, his Lahainaluna High School girls swimming team came through in every spot they needed to as the Lunas piled up 93 points to swamp the competition at the Maui Interscholastic League Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday afternoon at Kihei Aquatic Center.

Popdan, the Lunas coach, wore a red tie with a dress shirt and black slacks — a stark contrast to the other coaches there in short sleeves, shorts and slippers or tennis shoes.

The Lunas won their third MIL team title ever — the others came in 2001 and 2002 when state champion Jessica Nohara led the way — and denied Baldwin the girls team title for only the third time in MIL history, which dates back to the 1960s.

''The only time I have ever done this is when we won the first time,'' Popdan said to The Maui News. ''Before the season started we all hiked up to the 'L' (above the school's West Maui campus), which I considered our journey to the top. Yesterday, I came in with the boots that I wore on that hike for prelims. Then I said today was going to be our celebration, and you know, we are celebrating.''

On the boys side, Seabury Hall came through with a must-win in the final event — the 400-yard freestyle relay — to hold off Baldwin for the team crown.

Seabury Hall entered the final event — worth 12 to the winner and eight to the runner-up — ahead 50-47 over the Bears. Baldwin senior anchor Kevin Kim, who swam a blazing 48-second leg, nearly caught Spartans freshman Ridge Altman at the wall before Altman touched in 3 minutes, 31.00 seconds. Baldwin finished in 3:31.90.

It is just the second boys team title ever for the Spartans, to go along with the 2004 crown that Randall Tom, a 2008 Olympic Trials qualifier and NCAA scorer for UC Irvine, led them to.

The Lunas girls got only three individual wins — one each from the Gill sisters, Hailey, Mariah, and Koral. Koral Gill, a freshman who entered high school a year early so she could swim with her sisters, won the 100-yard butterfly and finished second in the 200 individual medley. Hailey Gill, a junior, won the 50 free and swam on two of the Lunas' three relay winners. Mariah Gill, a senior, finished third in the 50 behind Hailey, but stepped in to win the 500 freestyle in what both Popdan and Baldwin coach Wade Hondo said was a key spot.

Fellow seniors Michelle Fuller, who finished second in the 200 free and third in the 500; Alana Hendrickson; and Natalie Austin, who was third in the 200 free and a member of two of the relays, all helped the Lunas beat the runner-up Bears by 22 points. Seabury Hall and Kamehameha Maui tied for a distant third with 27 apiece.

''It was a great senior-led team that came through in the clutch,'' Popdan said. ''There were some strategies that both teams played. The biggest one was in the 500 freestyle, where they came in seeded first and second and we finished first and third.

''The reason I think we did what we did today is because they are such a tight, cohesive unit. They have been together for a long time, some of them since kindergarten. The senior class is like that and the freshman class is the same way. I think the reason we were so strong today is because they have such a strong bond.''

The Bears took defending state champion Jennifer Cahill out of the 500 and she responded with wins in the 100 free and 100 backstroke. Swimmers are allowed a maximum of three events in championship meets, only two of which can be individual.

''I think they made the right move,'' Popdan said of the Bears' strategy. ''They left it to their second-tier 500 free girls to hold us off and we did the same thing. We were just stronger when it mattered today.''

Hondo pointed directly to the Gill sisters and their bond as a key to the meet.

''They all showed up today, that army that they have, they all showed up today and they all did well,'' Hondo said of the Lunas. ''All of their role players did well and the Gill sisters did excellent. The most dangerous person to me was Mariah in the 500 free because she, to me, she swam that race for her sisters. You got to respect that. The 500 was a big strategy point for this meet. Normally she is not in that event and I wouldn't be surprised if she asked for it and I'll bet she asked for it because of her sisters.''

Fuller said Saturday was the final step for a group that has been working for an MIL title since they were freshmen.

''This means the world to us,'' Fuller said. ''This is what we have been working for for four years. We got close a couple of times, but this past year all the hard work, all the practices, everything, it just came down to this meet. And we knew that, that it was our last shot and the rest of the team knew it was our last shot, so they wanted to do it for us.''

Popdan sees a possible top-five team finish at the state championships for his deep squad that will take advantage of the relays they dominated on Saturday.

''I think they can,'' he said. ''We are going to be relay-led, but if all three relays score we are going to be top five.''

For the boys, first-year Seabury Hall coach Andy Marsh, a three-time NCAA qualifier when he ran cross country and track for Michigan State, said it was a complete team effort. His boys were chasing Baldwin all meet long after the Bears started by taking 1-2-3 in 1-meter diving to score 13 points on the 6-4-3-2-1 individual scale.

The Spartans took their slight lead to the final relay when Zach Johnson won and Rickey Koga finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke, while Baldwin's Matt Patao-Torres was third.

''We came in and did exactly what we were talking about, up and down the line, of not worrying about what other teams were doing,'' Marsh said. ''We wanted to just improve what we did, try to get faster, try to defy the seeding charts. If you are seed third, try to get second. I think up and down the line, our guys came through.''

The final relay had several twists as Lahainaluna's four-time state champion Jack Pope led off and gave his team a big lead after 100 yards. After three more lead changes, Kim almost tracked down Altman at the wire.

''All we wanted to do — we knew we were outmanned, we knew we were outgunned — we just wanted to go into the last relay with a chance to win,'' Hondo said. ''I think a lot of credit goes to the boys, who pulled themselves together. And a lot of credit goes to Dr. (Dennis) Rowe (the diving coach). We got a big lift from the divers and that is what Doc does. He makes those divers come by and this is when they help us the most.''

Pope, who took first in the 200 and 500 freestyles, was one of five swimmers to win two individual events on Saturday. Other double winners were Cahill (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke), Seabury's Libby Matthews (200 IM, 100 breaststroke), Kim (50 and 100 freestyle) and King Kekaulike's Jasmeet Jernaill (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke).
