GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany — Reinfried Herbst of Austria put together the fastest times in each run to win a World Cup slalom today, while overall leader Bode Miller failed to finish.

Herbst had a combined time of 1 minute, 42 seconds, and Manfred Moelgg of Italy Moelgg followed in 1:42.65. Ivica Kostelic of Croatia was third.

Miller straddled a gate halfway down the slope and did not finish the first run. His closest challenger, Benjamin Raich of Austria, finished 11th to gain ground in the standings in the overall World Cup standings.

Miller has 1,067 points, followed by Raich with 969. Miller has collected World Cup points in only three of eight slaloms this season.

Although Herbst led by nearly half a second after the first run on a sun-drenched Gudiberg course, he did not hold back in the second heat while earning his second World Cup victory.

On a tough slope, many top-ranked skiers had problems.

World Cup slalom leader Jean-Baptiste Grange of France, winner of three straight slaloms earlier in the season, placed 25th.

Felix Neureuther, racing on his home slope but recovering from a cold, shared fourth place with Kostelic after the first run. But he had numerous mistakes in the second and finished 17th.

Others who failed to finish were Rainer Schoenfelder, Mario Matt and Alexander Koll, Jens Byggmark, Marc Gini and Marc Berthod.

Grange remains the slalom leader with 462 points, while Matt is 91 points behind.
