Sea Grant College events honor humpback whales

February is Humpback Whale Awareness Month and the University of Hawai'i Sea Grant College is offering free events each Thursday through its Hanauma Bay Education Program.

Thursday: "Understanding Strandings, Marine Mammal Beaching," a lecture by Dr. Kristi West, professor of Biology, University of Hawai'i.

Feb. 14: "Whales in Crisis," a documentary produced by National Geographic.

Feb. 21: "Talking Trash! Marine Debris and Wildlife Entanglement," a lecture by Carey Morishige of NOAA's Marine Debris Program.

Feb. 28: Lecture TBA, Humpback Whale Awareness Month Contest Awards begin at 6:15 p.m.

All events happen at the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve theater from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Parking is free after 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 397-5840.
