Is your kitchen sponge getting that grungy smell? Did you know you could use your microwave to nuke away germs? Just wet it and splash with vinegar or lemon juice, then microwave for a few minutes. (Be careful when you remove it — it'll be hot!) Or pop the smelly thing into the dishwasher the next time you've got a cycle to run and voila! A fresh scent.

KEEP IT GREEN WHEN YOU CLEAN

Green cleaning tips by Michael de Jong (of "Clean: The Humble Art of Zen-Cleansing"):

  • Got mud? Sprinkle carpet with baking soda to cover the spot completely. Wait 20 minutes, vacuum.

  • Laundry bleach substitute: Mix 1/4 cup borax, 2 cups water.

  • Ink be gone: Lemon works on cloth. Put it directly on the spot, let it sit overnight, then launder as usual.
