An evening with Maori actor at UH

Advertiser Staff

Dying to hear about working in Hollywood, as well as the dish on the New Zealand indigenous movie scene?

"An Evening With New Zealand Actor Cliff Curtis" is the topic of a free talk at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Yukiyoshi Room, Krauss Hall 012.

One of New Zealand's best-known actors, Curtis had leading roles in the internationally successful films "Once Were Warriors" and "Whale Rider." Of New Zealand Maori descent, Curtis, as a young man, learned the traditional Maori fighting styles of mau rakau. He enrolled at the New Zealand Drama School, continuing his studies at the Teatro Dmitri Scoula in Switzerland.

He's also acted alongside Bruce Willis, Harrison Ford, Johnny Depp, Nicolas Cage, Denzel Washington, Jim Carrey, Arnold Schwarzenegger and George Clooney in films including "The Piano," "Three Kings," "Blow," "Collateral Damage" and most recently, "Crossing Over" and "10,000 B.C."

Curtis also will teach a Pacific New Media workshop: "Scene Stealer: Making Movies From an Actor's Perspective," Feb. 16-17; $200.
