The Kamehameha-Hawai'i girls soccer team was pressed into desperation mode against Honoka'a yesterday and Pua Hall answered the call.
Hall scored twice in the final three minutes as Kamehameha-Hawai'i beat Honoka'a, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the JN Automotive Group/HHSAA Girls Soccer Division II State Championships at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.
"Most of our games have been a lot easier than this," said Kamehameha-Hawai'i coach Charles Heaukulani said. "If we have more games like this I don't think we'll have any more coaches standing."
Hall's first goal came on a header in the 78th minute and she put Kamehameha (15-0) ahead with a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal in the 80th.
"I think she's the fiercest competitor we have," Heaukulani said. "She's a great soccer player, has great skills, great determination. It's just that refusal to lose, that willingness to do whatever it takes to win ... that's what makes her different from everybody else."
In the final minutes, the Warriors pulled everybody up into the attacking zone, and it paid off.
Hall's first goal came on a header over the goal keeper from just outside the 6-yard box.
"We were just trying really hard to get that tying goal because we were behind and we just went for it," said Hall, a junior. "I went all out for it and it went in."
Hall scored the go-ahead goal by saving a ball from going out of bounds on the left side, dribbling into the penalty box and shooting from the right side.
"It was right there and I just took the shot," she said.
Hall's go-ahead goal was the icing on the cake for Heaukulani.
"To be honest I was content to go into OT," he said. "For them to sneak another goal in just before the end of regulation. ... I didn't think it was going to happen."
