President-elect Barack Obama and his family took a drive this afternoon along the North Shore and stopped to visit a high school friend.

Obama made a stop during the afternoon drive at a private property on on Farrington Highway just west of Waialua shortly after 12:30 p.m. Media were told it was the home of Bobby Titcomb, who went to Punahou with Obama, but a tall fence with thick vegetation prevented media from seeing inside the property.

Before that, Obama's motorcade briefly stopped at Turtle Bay Resort.

The Sunday drive came after Obama started his vacation day again with a trip to the Semper Fit Center at Marine Corps Base Hawaii this morning.

Obama was joined by Chicago friends Eric Whitaker and Marty Nesbitt for his workout, leaving for the gym at 7:11 a.m. and arriving at the base at 7:20 a.m.

Wearing a gray T-shirt and black warm-up pants, Obama left the fitness center at 8:23 a.m. and greeted several dozen troops and others waiting outside to see him and snap photos.

At one point, Obama gave an extended "aloha," where each syllable was dragged out.

Obama departed at 8:25 a.m.

Linda Gray, a real estate agent who lives near the base, said she has seen Obama two or three times at the fitness center since he started working out there on Dec. 21. Her husband is retired military, and she works out at the center at roughly the same time as Obama.

"I think we are all proud to have him born and raised in Hawaii," she said.

Gray said Obama was doing a cardio workout this morning and also playing basketball. She said he had a slip of paper in his hand that she suspected was his workout plan.

Obama arrived back at his Kailua vacation rental at 8:33 a.m.
