Hawaii beats national average in local born residents

Advertiser Staff

A study by the Pew Research Center shows that six out of 10 adult Hawai'i residents were born here, or a little more than the national average of 56 percent of adults living in their home state.

Hawai'i ranked 21st in terms of highest percentage of native-born adults, with Nevada having the fewest (13 percent) and New York having the highest (82 percent).

In general, Pew researchers said people who move most often cite economic opportunity, while those who stay cite family and connections to certain areas.

The research also found that people who live in the West are more apt to move, as are college graduates.

The research turned also found that 57.3 percent of adults who were born in Hawai'i still live here.

Hawai'i ranked 26 highest in this aspect. Texas had the highest percentage of adult residents who were born in the state at 75.8 percent. Only 13 percent of adults in Washington, D.C. were born there.
