Rezoning approved for Makena resort

Associated Press

WAILUKU, Hawai'i — The Maui County Council voted 5-3 in favor of rezoning more than 600 South Maui acres to accommodate an 800-unit luxury home development.

Supporters say the Makena Resort development will help create jobs and boost Maui's economy.

Opponents say it will jeopardize South Maui's environment and culture.

The project also includes 400 affordable housing units.

Investment bank Morgan Stanley owns roughly 90 percent of the property. Wailuku developer Everett Dowling is a general partner on the project.

Riki Hokama, Bill Medeiros, Mike Molina, Joe Pontanilla and Mike Victorino voted in favor of the rezoning on Friday.

Michelle Anderson, Danny Mateo and Jo Anne Johnson voted against it. Gladys Baisa was absent.
