Hundreds helped by Oahu assistance centers after recent floods

During four days of operations, Disaster Assistance and Recovery Centers processed 500 requests for services and information from O'ahu residents affected by last week's high winds, heavy rains and flooding.

The DARC operations were set up near the hardest-hit flood areas on the island: Waialua, Hale'iwa, La'ie, Windward O'ahu, Waipahu and the Wai'anae Coast. A mobile DARC, including several vehicles and personnel from state, city, and nongovernmental organizations, traveled to sites along O'ahu's windward coastline Saturday to serve affected residents who might have difficulty reaching the centers at La'ie and Kualoa Ranch.

Data collected will help determine recovery programs that may be available to those affected by the flooding.

Anyone willing to join Aloha United Way, the Salvation Army and other charitable and civic-minded groups in the recovery effort, can get more information by calling Hawaii State Civil Defense at 733-4300, ext. 610.
