Shark warning signs will remain posted for at least another day after a shark fin was spotted this morning while lifeguards were assessing the situation, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.

The warning signs went up yesterday after a shark estimated to be 8 to 10 feet was spotted just 6 feet from shore in the muddy, debris-filled water.

The water was so murky, lifeguards could not tell what type of shark it was.

Although the water is a bit cleaner today, it is still on the murky side with a lot of debris still floating or suspended in the water, Cheplic said. While a fin was spotted this morning, lifeguards could not tell what type of shark it was or how large it was, Cheplic said.

In addition, the shoreline is still littered with tree branches, leaves, old lumber and other rubbish that washed into the ocean during the intense rain storms this past weekend.

Surf at Makaha is 1 to 3 feet today, but lifeguards are expecting a bump upwards on Saturday when a new northwest swell is due to arrive, Cheplic said.

"Hopefully, the debris, murky water and shark situations will be resolved by then," Cheplic said.

The shark warning signs will be posted throughout the day today and lifeguards will reassess the situation tomorrow morning.
