A public ceremony was held at 5 p.m. yesterday for the dedication of the 1st Lt. Jonathan P. Brostrom Community Center at Fort Shafter.

Brostrom was assigned as platoon leader, 2nd Platoon, Chosen Company, 2-053 Airborne Regiment, 173 Infantry Brigade, when he was killed in action in Afghanistan.

According to the Department of Defense, at dawn on July 13, Brostrom's platoon was attacked by a force of more than 200 while the soldiers were establishing a Forward Operating Base in the village of Wanat.

Upon hearing that an observation post had taken significant casualties and was in danger of being overrun, Brostrom and another airborne trooper departed and fought through heavy enemy fire attempting to get to the observation post.

Despite being wounded numerous times, Brostrom continued to fire to keep the attackers at bay, the Army reported.

Brostrom was killed in action while successfully repelling the enemy attack. His actions saved the lives of three soldiers, the Army reported.
