ON OUR RADAR | JULIE HEWETT MAKEUP ARRIVES IN ISLES

Celebrity makeup artist Julie Hewett first caught our eye when she created a special red lipstick for every leading actress in the movie "Pearl Harbor." She went on to do lots more movies, such as "The Good German," "American Beauty," "Batman Forever" and "Flight Plan." Then she launched her own line of lipsticks and we couldn't get enough of those fab reds we ordered from her Web site.

Each time she worked on a movie star (Nicole Kidman, Liv Tyler, Hilary Swank, Jodie Foster and Annette Bening, to name a few), Hewett learned something new. She also learned what was missing in the makeup marketplace and began to create products to fill specific needs.

Her "Omit" concealer pencil is perfect as a reverse liner for lips. Camellia Lip Balm effectively heals chapped lips. Pure Persian Rosewater and Pure Cucumber Extract sprays tone and rehydrate skin and refresh and set makeup throughout the day.

Pure means pure: These have just one ingredient, no additives. And those reds! With seven Bijou sheers and six dramatic double-pigmented classics, Hewett believes there is a perfect red lipstick for every woman on earth. Sold exclusively by Liz Dahl and Maile Nakanelua at

Etch Salon; 591-0106 or lizdahl@lizdahl.com

SIG ZANE TO DEBUT NEW COLLECTION AT SOIREE

Big Island artist and fashion designer Sig Zane is holding a holiday party to debut his latest collection, Pu'umanawale'a, which celebrates a sense of place. Zane says, "The hills of our islands are famous in story, song and dance. The prominent pu'u, Le'ahi, Puowaina, Kohelepelepe, Pu'u'o'o, dot our landscapes and are likened to the beauty marks on a person's face. The 2009 styles represent tradition, experience and celebration. Each has a name. They speak culturally, share the varied places we've been and they celebrate life and art."

Zane debuts the collection from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at his store in Historic Downtown Hilo, 122 Kamehameha Avenue; 808-935-7077 or http://www.sigzane.com.
