Kalapana concert a benefit for Saint Louis' 'Rent'

By Wayne Harada

Kalapana, the popular contemporary Island group, will give a benefit concert at 8 p.m. Jan. 17 at Mamiya Theatre. The performance will support Saint Louis Center for the Arts' bid to bring its summertime "Rent: School Edition" production to the prestigious Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland next summer.

Kyle Kakuno, director of the musical, will accompany the acting ensemble to Edinburgh, leaving Aug. 4 with a stop in London enroute to Scotland, where the cast will spend 11 days. Saint Louis School's "Rent" production was invited to participate in the 15th Annual American High School Theatre Festival in Edinburgh.

The show tapped high school students from Saint Louis, Punahou, Kamehameha, Sacred Hearts Academy, La Pietra, Kaimuki, Roosevelt and McKinley, playing to full houses last July.

It's the second Edinburgh trek for Saint Louis; its 2005 production of "Aida" also was invited to the Fringe Festival.

Two in the "Rent" cast have ties to Kalapana: Kanoe Holomalia is the daughter of Gaylord Holomalia, the group's keyboard master and engineer, and Brianna Pratt is the niece of D.J. Pratt, the group's guitarist.

Tickets will start at $95 and will be available starting Dec. 19 through Ticketmaster locations including the Blaisdell Center box office and Macy's locations.
