Kaiser High students sent home due to power outage
Kaiser High School students have been dismissed for the day after electricians were unable to quickly fix a problem with the school's electrical transformer.
Students were told shortly after 9:30 this morning that classes would be canceled today, said principal John Sosa. They were allowed to leave campus and were asked to notify their parents, he said.
Students who are waiting for their parents to pick them up will be kept with teachers and staff, he said.
The school's electrical problems began yesterday afternoon, during the last period of the day. Fuses apparently needed to be replaced in the electrical transformers.
Power then went out again last night and the school still had no power when it opened this morning, Sosa said.
"We opened this morning thinking it would be a quick fix," he said.
But electrical technicians indicated that it may take the morning and part of the afternoon to restore power.
"We won't be able to serve lunch, we can't run any computer lab equipment," Sosa said. "We decided to let the kids go," he said
Also, Leilehua High School and Wahiawa Middle School will be closed today due to flood damage, said Sandy Goya, spokeswoman for the Department of Education.
Any decision on other school closures will likely be made this morning when weather conditions have been assessed and school officials determine that it would be safe to hold instruction, said Goya.
The latest school closure news will be posted on the DOE Web site under "school closures" at http://doe.k12.hi.us.
