Closures, cancellations announced across the islands

All afternoon sailings of TheBoat have been canceled today because of the weather.

All 'ewa-bound passengers will be transported from Aloha Tower to Kalaeloa via the F-shuttle bus, city officials said.

No shuttle bus service is available from Kalaeloa to Aloha Tower, and passengers should contact TheBus at 848-5555 for other bus routes and schedules to Aloha Tower.

Here is a list of other closures:

  • The Waiehu Golf Course in Wailuku closed at about 11 a.m. for the rest of the day due to flooded conditions, County Parks officials announced. The golf course will reopen as soon as course conditions allow.

  • Due to forecasted weather conditions, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command's planned Arrival Ceremony at 9 a.m. tomorrow in Hangar 35, on Hickam AFB, has been postponed.

  • Tonight's meeting of the 'Ewa Neighborhood Board. The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2009.

  • The Kahuku Public and School Library, Kailua Public Library, and Waimanalo Public and School Library.

    Library items that are due at the libraries will have their fines adjusted, library officials said. Pickup dates for reserved items also will be adjusted.

  • The Movement Center, 1215 Center St. No. 211, is closed today. Classes will resume on Friday.

  • Waialua Beach Park and Hanauma Bay are closed due to surf and storm surge, according to the city Department of Emergency Management.

  • Punahou athletic facilities will be closed after school, meaning no practices, meetings, etc.

    Exceptions are those teams in outside tournament play, which are:

    Boys Varsity I Basketball – 10th Annual James Alegre Tournament (Radford High)

    Boys Varsity II Basketball – 2008 Kalaheo Tournament (Kalaheo High)

    Girls Varsity I Basketball – 2008 Iolani Prep Girls Classic (Iolani School)

    Boys JV Blue Basketball – Kaimuki JV Boys Tournament (Kaimuki High)

    Boys JV Gold Basketball – Pearl City JV Boys Tournament (Pearl City High)

    At this time, all of these tournaments are still on as scheduled.

  • A public scoping meeting for the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge Comprehensive Conservation Plan has been canceled due to heavy rain.

    The meeting had been scheduled for tonight from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Kahuku Community Center.

    The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to reschedule the meeting in January.

  • City closes zoo, golf courses, botanical gardens

    City officials have closed the Honolulu Zoo, all municipal golf courses and the five botanical gardens: Wahiawa, Liliuokalani, Foster, Ho'omaluhia and Koko Crater.

  • Army tells nonessential personnel to stay home

    The Army is telling nonessential personnel at Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Army Airfield not to report to work today until 1 p.m. because of flooding and downed debris.

    U.S. Army Garrison also announced the following Child Care Development Centers are closed: Schofield and Peterson, both on Schofield Barracks, and Helemano Military Reservation.

    The Bennett Youth Center on Schofield Barracks is also closed until further notice.

    Fort Shafter, Fort Shafter Flats and Fort DeRussy are operating normally, the Army said, and all gates are open at Schofield. Wheeler's Kawamura Gate is open to in-bound traffic.

    But Helemano Military Reservation's gate is closed.

  • Arizona Memorial Visitor Center closed today

    The heavy rain and wind has closed the USS Arizona Memorial shoreside Visitor Center and Museum today.

    Weather permitting, tours will resume tomorrow, a spokesman for the Visitors Center said.

    Visitor Center hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The first tour to the memorial leaves at 7:45 a.m. and the last tour leaves at 3 p.m.

  • The Polynesian Cultural Center will be closed today due to bad weather and is scheduled to reopen tomorrow.

    Customers who have tickets for today may reschedule by calling 293-3333.

  • The release of the Hawaiian monk seal, "KP2," has been postponed due to weather until further notice.

    The monk seal was discovered on a Kaua'i beach in May after it had abandoned by its mother when it was one day old.

    KP2 spent the first few months under critical care at NOAA's Kewalo Research Facility, gaining weight and getting its condition to stabilize. Once healthy, it was transferred to a shore pen at Marine Corps Base-Hawaii where it has been learning to survive in the wild.

    The new release date has not been announced yet.

  • Open-air kiosks closed at Aloha Tower

    Most of the open-air kiosks at Aloha Tower are closed today because of the rain and at least some regular stores were also closed, an employee at Aloha Tower reported.

    "Usually when it rains like this we give kiosk owners a choice of whether to open, so it's not that unusual to have them closed on days like today," said Melissa Chang, marketing manager for Aloha Tower. "But it is unusual in the sense that we haven't had this kind of rain in a year."
