Alaskan hurt in moped crash

A 51-year-old Alaska woman was critically injured yesterday in a moped crash on Diamond Head Road.

The accident happened about 3:08 p.m. near Makalei Place.

Police said the woman sustained "open head wounds" when she apparently fell off her moped.

The woman was not wearing a helmet.

Two others traveling on mopeds with her were not involved in the crash.

Speed and alcohol were not factors, police said.



POLICE SEEK HELP IN SCHOOL THEFT

Big Island police are asking for the public's help in tracking down suspects in a theft and vandalism at Ka'u High School over the weekend.

Police said 14 laptops, two televisions and a printer were stolen from the school.

Officers also said vandals set fires in several areas on campus.

Police are asking anyone with information on the case to call Detective Gerald Wike at 326-4646, ext. 302. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.



CAUSE OF MAN'S DEATH UNKNOWN

An autopsy on the Hilo man who died in police custody Nov. 29 provided no conclusive results.

Hilo police said yesterday an exact cause of death for 47-year-old Barry Joseph Curl could not be determined.

There were no signs of traumatic injuries on his body, police said.

Toxicology tests are pending.

Curl died in custody at the Hilo cellblock.
