Memorial services for former Kea'au High School boys basketball coach Wade Ishibashi Sr. have been set for this week.

Ishibashi, a former standout at Waiakea High and a well-known coach in the Hilo area basketball community, died Nov. 16 at The Queen's Medical Center after a 2 1/2-year battle with leukemia.

He was 42.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday at Kea'au High School Gym, and also from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hilo Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., followed by burial at the Homelani Memorial Park. The family requests casual attire and no flowers.

Ishibashi had been Kea'au's head coach the past five years and had planned to coach this season. But he fell ill in early November and was admitted to Queen's soon after.

His son, Wade "Aukai" Ishibashi Jr., has since been named head coach.

Ishibashi was known not just for his tenure at Kea'au; as a Waiakea student he helped found the Delirious Basketball Club for youths in Hilo and had coached in community leagues for many years. He later coached boys and girls at Kea'au High and Middle schools.

Ishibashi is also survived by wife, Denise Parong Ishibashi; son, Dylen Kahakuokalani Ishibashi; daughters Kirsten Kaohinani Ishibashi and Kristen Auli'ilani Ishibashi; mother, Patricia Puahala Delaries, hanai grandmother, Mary Ann Kaiwa; father-in-law, Dionicio Parong, Jr.; mother-in-law, Paula Parong; brothers Wallace (Naty) Ishibashi Jr. and Anthony (Rosie) Delaries; stepbrother, Norman (Cookie) Gaspar; sisters Wendy (Kenneth) Urbanozo and Melanie Kahealani Molinero.

SERVICE SET FOR FORMER MAUI HIGH COACH MATSUI

Memorial services have been set for former longtime Maui High football coach and athletic director Izumi "Shine" Matsui.

Matsui, 77, was Maui High's coach from 1959 through 1968 and was a teacher and athletic director until 1988. He died Nov. 26.

A wake is scheduled for 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at Ballard Family Mortuary and an urn burial for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Maui Veterans Cemetery.
