Good news, bad news for Dallas

IRVING, Texas — Another receiver down for the Dallas Cowboys.
Sam Hurd, the team's No. 3 wideout, left the locker room wearing a protective boot on his left foot last night after getting hurt in the Cowboys' 16-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in their preseason finale.
"That is a real concern, certainly," said coach Wade Phillips, who described Hurd's injury as a high ankle sprain. "That was the downer to the game."
Receivers Miles Austin (sprained right knee) and Isaiah Stanback (dislocated shoulder) were already out with injuries, Austin could be out another month after getting hurt covering a kickoff two weeks ago in Denver, and Stanback was hurt returning a kick in the last game.
That leaves the Cowboys with some questions about the health of their receivers before cutting their roster to 53 players tomorrow. Neither Phillips nor owner Jerry Jones wanted to speculate on the situation.
Hurd was hurt on the opening drive of the game, when he landed awkwardly after being tackled from behind at the end of a 35-yard reverse run.
Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton, the Cowboys' top two receivers, didn't even play. Neither did Tony Romo nor any of the rest of the offensive or defensive starters — except for fullback Deon Anderson.
Owens and freshly reinstated Adam "Pacman" Jones didn't even bother to put on their football pants. T.O. wore warmup pants and Jones was in shorts while watching from the sideline.
The good news for the Cowboys was that Jones, acquired by Dallas from Tennessee in April, found out earlier yesterday that he has been fully reinstated from his NFL suspension and is clear to play in the regular season. The Sept. 7 opener at Cleveland will be his first NFL game since Dec. 31, 2006.
The cornerback-kick returner, who played in the first three preseason games for the Cowboys, missed all last season with the Titans after his suspension that followed an accumulation of arrests and legal problems.
"I am fully a Dallas Cowboy," Jones proclaimed before the last preseason game. "I don't have it lingering over my head, will he get reinstated, will he not get reinstated. I just have to keep myself out of bad situations like I have been doing the last six or seven months."
JAGUARS 24, REDSKINS 3
Given the poor performance of Washington's starting offense, one of the biggest cheers of the night came when rookie Colt Brennan entered the game in the second quarter against the Jacksonville, Jaguars.
The rookie quarterback from the University of Hawai'i, though still very raw for NFL, has excited fans by putting up good numbers against other teams' backups all preseason and did so again, going 13 for 18 for 119 yards.
The Jaguars held the Redskins' starters to 14 total yards in three first-quarter drives, and David Garrard, Cleo Lemon and Todd Bouman all threw a touchdown pass to lead visiting Jacksonville to a victory.
GIANTS 19, PATRIOTS 14
David Carr completed 20 of 29 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns to seemingly nail down the backup spot to Elii Manning as host New York beat New England — winless in four preseason games — in last night's matchup of February's Super Bowl opponents.

LIONS 14, BILLS 6
Backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky was 12 for 21 for 114 yards and threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Felton as visiting Detroit beat Buffalo to close preseason with an NFL-best 4-0 record, the first time they've gone unbeaten since going 4-0-1 in 1993.
STEELERS 19, PANTHERS 16
Jeff Reed kicked his fourth field goal of the game, a 43-yarder on the last play, to lift visiting Pittsburgh over Carolina, which tied the game when No. 3 quarterback Brett Basanez threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Chris Hannon with 1:54 remaining.
BEARS 16, BROWNS 10
Robbie Gould kicked field goals of 48, 29 and 46 yards as visiting Chicago rallied past Cleveland, which took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter behind Brady Quinn, who finished 7-of-9 for 65 yards in his two series which both ended in scores.
TITANS 23, PACKERS 21
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers took the rest of the night off after throwing a 68-yard TD pass on his first snap, but Vincent Fuller scored on a 40-yard run off a fake punt as visiting Tennessee rallied, then held on to a victory.
DOLPHINS 14, SAINTS 10
Chad Henne solidified his backup role to starter Chad Pennington, going 16 of 20 for 137 yards and an 8-yard touchdown, and Ronnie Brown rushed 12 times for 47 yards and a 1-yard touchdown as visiting Miami beat New Orleans for its third straight victory.

CHIEFS 21, RAMS 17
Brodie Croyle directed two quick first-quarter touchdown drives with Kolby Smith running 14 and 4 yards for touchdowns, and Damon Huard took over in the third period and made it 21-3 with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Sippio to lead host Kansas City past St. Louis.
