Washington Place will be shuttered for about six weeks while the museum undergoes safety, accessibility and landscaping improvements.

State officials say the structure built in 1842 will be closed to the public from Wednesday through Oct. 17.

The improvements include replacing the 1920s brick walkway that leads from the Beretania Street gate to the main entry of the house located across from the state Capitol. Wrought iron gates will be repaired and a new landscape irrigation will be installed.

The officials say the cost of the work is $358,000.

Washington Place was home to Hawaii's last reigning monarch, Queen Liliuokalani. It also served as the executive mansion of Hawaii's governors from 1921 to 2002.
