Frozen treats, burgers join mix at Beach Walk

Nearly 1 1/2 years after opening, the Waikiki Beach Walk development continues to tweak the business mix there — with a new-to-the-Islands frozen yogurt franchise opening soon as well as a familiar burger place.
Barbara Campbell, vice president for retail leasing/development for Outrigger Enterprises Group, said in an interview Friday that Red Mango frozen yogurt is taking over the small space that was leased by Beard Papa's cream puff specialists on Lewers Street.
"We're real excited," Campbell said. "We think it's a perfect fit."
And a new Cheeseburger Beach Walk restaurant will go where Holokai Grill had been, she said. Campbell said the high-end restaurants such as Roy's and Ruth's Chris Steak House continue to thrive as does the more casual Yard House restaurant.
And she said the Taormina Sicilian Cuisine eatery is doing well, too. "They had their best month ever in July," she said.
Red Mango is a California leader in what's being dubbed "fro-yo wars" in national news stories. The trend is toward "tart" frozen yogurt with live cultures. Two leading chains are Red Mango with some 30 U.S. stores and dozens more planned; and Pinkberry, with more than 50 stores and more planned.
Red Mango spokeswoman Elizabeth Berry said the Waikiki store "will be open within the next two weeks and we will be celebrating by offering free frozen yogurt at our grand opening event."
Both Red Mango and Pinkberry were started by entrepreneurs from South Korea and rely on variations of plain yogurt and green tea, served with a variety of toppings — and blended into drinks — with a starting price around $5.
Another big frozen yogurt chain is Yogurtland, which opened an outlet this year near the University of Hawai'i-Manoa in the old Volcano Joe's restaurant. It offers more flavors and — according to Internet posts and reviews — has been drawing crowds.
Adding yogurt and burgers to the Beach Walk development is part of adjusting to respond to the market, Campbell said. "We'll continue to make refinements in the tenant mix."
How cool is Red Mango? The chain has its own MySpace page.
The company describes itself this way: "Red Mango's most unique differentiating factor is its authenticity in creating a genuine 'better for you' nonfat frozen yogurt that is made with 100 percent all natural ingredients by licensed U.S. dairy manufacturers."
It adds: "Red Mango brings the coffee house experience to the world of yogurt, providing the perfect escape for today's active, health-conscious consumer."
A Web pitch for potential employees at the new store reads: "We offer competitive salaries and benefits, comprehensive training programs, flexible hours, work-life balance, and free frozen yogurt!"
On a different part of the food spectrum, Cheeseburger is expected to open in November or December. Campbell said that will be the third store in Waikiki for the chain, joining two others on Kalakaua Avenue.
She said people like to experiment with different foods but also want comfort food. "There's nothing more familiar than a cheeseburger and french fries."
