In the cool heights of Big Island lava country, the Volcano Art Center Gallery is housed in the historic Volcano House Hotel, built in 1877.
The building — listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the first Western-style structure in the Volcano region and Hawai'i's oldest visitor accommodation — is the subject of " 'Ohana Sunday at Niaulani: The Volcano House Story," presented by historian Fran Jackson.
The talk will be the fifth in a series of 2008 lectures on the art and culture of Hawai'i.
Come hear Jackson recount stories about the building's long and fascinating history, and see photographs which trace the old Volcano House through to its present use as a fine arts gallery.
Tomorrow at 2 p.m., Volcano Art Center's Niaulani Campus at the corner of Kalanikoa and Old Volcano roads. Free (calabash donations welcome). 808-967-8222.
