ML Macadamia's net loss widens

ML Macadamia Orchards LP said its net loss widened during the second quarter even as it saw boosted nut sales and contract farming revenue.
The company reported a net loss of $398,000, or 5 cents per Class A share. That compared with a year-earlier loss of $356,000 or 5 cents a share.
The Hilo-based company said nut revenue rose to $937,000 in the three months ended June 30 as it had $875,000 in kernel sales from inventory.
It said year-earlier nut revenue amounted to $599,000, of which $504,000 was in kernel sales from inventory.
Contract farming revenue rose $40,000 to $666,000.
NEW STATE DATA BOOK IS OUT ONLINE
The state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism has released the 40th annual edition of the State of Hawai'i Data Book on the DBEDT Web site.
The Data Book, available at www.hawaii.gov/dbedt, offers a broad range of statistical information relating to Hawai'i in areas such as population, education, labor, energy, tourism and transportation.
"This year's edition provides new data from exciting new sources in addition to our traditional data bases," said DBEDT Director Theodore E. Liu.
The State of Hawai'i Data Book is produced by the Department's Research and Economic Analysis Division. It contains 807 tables. Some of the facts revealed in this newest edition:
GROUP SELLING ALOHA FEST RIBBONS
To help out with Aloha Festivals, the Hawai'i Hotel & Lodging Association has taken on the job of 2008 official O'ahu ribbon distributor for this year's 62nd annual event.
Association president Murray Towill said the organization is committed to "keeping the Aloha Festivals alive and well as one of Hawai'i's premier cultural showcases."
Ribbon sales help pay for operations for the Aloha Festivals, which was created in 1946 as "Aloha Week."
The association will take ribbon orders up until Sept. 12. The Aloha Festivals ribbons cost $5 each. Payment can be cash, checks made out to Aloha Festivals and credit cards. Pickup of event ribbons will be arranged through the association at the Waikiki Business Plaza, 2270 Kalakaua Ave., Suite 1506.

KAHALA NUI TO TEST HOANA SYSTEMS
Hoana Medical Inc. said it's entered a partnership with Kahala Nui for its patient vigilance systems at the retirement care community's Hi'olani Care Center.
Kahala Nui said it will have a pilot project to test the application of Hoana's technology in a skilled nursing facility. Hoana's LifeBed product helps identify patients as they begin to deteriorate and notifies nursing staffs.
