Choi wins Surf 'n' Sea for sweep

Shanelle Choi, a Pearl City High School senior, completed a sweep of the North Shore Swim Series yesterday, capturing the women's overall title at the Surf 'n' Sea North Shore Challenge.
Choi finished the 2.3-mile race from Pipeline to Waimea in 46 minutes, 1 second.
Kathryn Taylor was second in 46:17 and Kate Costello was third in 47:06.
Choi earlier won the first three legs of the North Shore Swim Series, the Raging Isle Sprint (1 mile); Cholos 2000 (1.2 miles); and the Surf 'n' Sea Chuns to Waimea Swim (1.6 miles).
In the men's overall division, Noa Sakamoto captured the title, finishing in 41:04. Mitchell Chong was second in 43:04 and Timothy Marr finished third in 43:07.

HILO'S WHITING FALLS OFF PACE AT FUTURES EVENT
Hilo's Leah Whiting shot a 5-over-par 77 and was tied for 27th after the second round yesterday of the Duramed Futures Tour Falls Auto Group Classic at Crooked Creek Golf Community in London, Ky.
Whiting started the day tied for third in the LPGA developmental tour event. Mindy Kim was the second-round leader at 137 after a 68 yesterday. Whiting was at 146.
Maui's Shayna Miyajima (76—151) and Kailua's Bridget Dwyer (75—152) missed the cut for today's final round.

MEETINGS WILL BE HELD FOR VOLLEYBALL, SOCCER
The University of Hawai'i at Hawai'i-Hilo is holding meetings for students interested in playing for the Vulcans volleyball and soccer teams.

WINTER LEAGUE WILL HOLD FOOD DRIVE ON AUG. 23
Hawaii Winter Baseball is conducting its second annual food drive that benefits the Women's Domestic Abuse Shelter from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 23 at the Pearl City Shopping Center, the league announced.
Checks also will be accepted in lieu of food goods.
