Firefighters handled two fires on the Leeward side yesterday, a house fire that displaced six people in Nanakuli and a brushfire near Makua Cave that scorched five acres.

Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha said the house fire broke out at 7:02 a.m. at a single-story residence at 87-344 Farrington Highway. He said a woman and five children ages 3 to 15 were displaced by the fire and were helped by the Red Cross.

Kealoha said the home was destroyed and damage was estimated at $265,000. The cause of the fire was still under investigation last night.

The brushfire burned five acres near Makua Cave, Kealoha said. He said about 30 firefighters from HFD and federal units, five engines and the Air One helicopter battled the blaze, which was reported at 3:49 p.m. and was under control by 4:55 p.m.

Kealoha said the brushfire could have been much worse but much of the area was green and not especially dry, which helped slowed down the fire.
