Prudential hires Hoku for system

Prudential Locations LLC has selected a unit of Hoku Scientific Inc. to install an electricity-generating photovoltaic system at the real estate company's headquarters in Honolulu.
The 87-kilowatt system is expected to generate more than 136,000 kilowatt hours of solar energy each year, according to a joint news release from the two companies. The system is part of an ongoing renovation at Prudential's flagship location on Kapahulu Avenue.
Once installed, the system is expected to produce enough electricity over its lifetime to power the equivalent of 382 homes for one year, and offset nearly 2,160 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of about 139 cars from Hawai'i's roadways.
Hoku's shares closed down 30 cents at $5.76 yesterday on the Nasdaq stock market.
FIRST HAWAIIAN OPENS NEW BRANCH
First Hawaiian Bank's new Tamuning branch on Guam opened for business yesterday.
A grand opening ceremony was held Saturday for the new branch, at Route 1 on South Marine Corps Drive in the commercial district. The 10,425-square-foot branch replaces the smaller, original Tamuning branch at Photo Town Plaza.
"The purchase of property, building construction and technology installation represents a significant investment and underscores our long-term confidence and commitment to Guam," said Don Horner, First Hawaiian Bank president and chief executive officer.
The branch offers a complete line of services from checking and savings accounts, commercial and consumer lending, retirement planning, insurance and estate planning
EXPO DRAWS CROWD OF 11,126
The fourth annual Remodel it Right Expo presented by the Building Industry Association of Hawaii said it generated attendance of 11,126 during the three-day event at the Hawai'i Convention Center.
Although attendance was down 8 percent from last year, organizers said they were encouraged by the popularity of two workshops — "Meet the Experts," and a "Remodel it Right" panel discussion.
"Since approximately 80 percent of O'ahu homes are about 60 years old and could benefit from a project, we are very excited to support this building industry consumer event designed to educate homeowners in a collaborative environment," said Karen Nakamura, BIA's chief executive officer.
The event was Aug. 1-3.
JAYCEES WELCOME NOMINATIONS
The Hawaii Jaycees Junior Chamber is accepting nominations for its 37th Annual Three Outstanding Young Persons from Hawaii Award.
The award recognizes individuals whose efforts challenge, motivate and inspire Hawai'i's youth. U.S. citizens between the ages of 18 and 40 are eligible for nomination. All entries must be postmarked by Aug. 15.
