Six Hawaii tennis players advance

Six Hawai'i players advanced in the opening day of the Hawaii International Tennis Federation Junior Tournament yesterday at the Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex.
In the boys division, Honolulu's Jared Spiker defeated Mexico's Daniel Castelao 6-0, 6-0; Pearl City's Matthew Westmoreland, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, topped Houston's Voigt Hansenberger 6-2, 6-1; and Hilo's Fernando Aguirregomezcorta beat Christopher Anderson of Irvine, Calif., 6-0, 6-0.
In the girls division, Honolulu's Kelly Domingo defeated Stella Crick of Sydney, Australia, 6-1, 6-2; Waipahu's Kelsey Daguio beat Jessica Worring of Camarillo, Calif., 6-3, 7-5; and Kailua, Kona's Sayo Tsukamoto topped Leihann Sahagun of Queens Village, N.Y., 6-1, 6-2.
The six-day tournament features 90 tennis players from 13 countries, including 20 from Hawai'i.

UH TICKETS ON SALE
Fans seeking to buy season tickets for the 2008-09 University of Hawai'i men's basketball team can begin making deposits tomorrow.
A $50 deposit per order will help ensure the best available seats when season-ticket sales start in September.
The deposit applies to new season-ticket purchases only, not renewals. Fans who renew season tickets from last season will get the first opportunity to retain their seats.
Following the end of the renewal process, fans who made deposits for new season tickets will be contacted in the order that their deposit was received.
Deposits for new season tickets can be paid at the Stan Sheriff Center box office, or online at www.hawaiiathletics.com.
Four players return from last season's team, including starting forward Bill Amis.
Hawai'i head coach Bob Nash and his staff recently completed their recruiting of new players for the 2008-09 season. Among the new recruits is Roderick Flemings, a highly-touted junior college All-America player at Weatherford (Texas) College.
"We can't wait to get this team on the court," Nash said. "I'm sure our fans will enjoy what they see and it would be great to see the arena full."
GOLF
UH LAST AFTER FIRST DAY
The University of Hawai'i men's golf team is in ninth and last place with a 324 score after the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament yesterday at San Jose, Calif.
New Mexico State leads at 286 at the Cinnabar Hills Golf Club. NMSU's Joshua Stewart leads at 5-under-par 67.
Hawai'i's Robert Berton shot four-over-par 76, tying for 12th. Other UH golfers were: Cody Pewarchuk (81, t-32nd), Kyle Walters(82, t-35th), Ryan Perez (85, 44th) and Kamden Brakel (86, 45th).
