HAWAI'I KAI — First-round wins of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red baseball tournament are more like sighs of relief.

Host Kaiser advanced to today's quarterfinals with an 8-1 win against Kapolei yesterday in opening-round action. The East third seed Cougars (9-4) will play West second seed 'Aiea (8-4) 6:30 tonight at Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

The Hurricanes (3-10) are done for the season.

"This is always the hardest," Kaiser coach Peter Ho said. "Once you get this, you have two more shots to get at it (a state tournament berth). But if you lose, it's a tough one. We've been in that situation."

Kaiser starting pitcher Zachary Wong threw a complete game, working out of jams from the six hits and four walks he allowed, as well as from five errors. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-hander struck out four.

Wong had support early from his offense when Cal Tashiro opened the home first with a home run off Kapolei starter Michael Sanchez. Later in the inning, Pono Meyer opened a 4-for-4 day with a two-run home run to give Kaiser a 3-0. Both homers were over the right field fence against the non-resistant kona wind.

"That's all I needed, to get my run support at the beginning," Wong said. "That way, I could just pitch the ball and let my defenders work."

In the top of the fifth, the Hurricanes had a run in to pull to 4-1 and had the bases loaded with one out. But Wong got Brandon Damas to hit a 1-0 curveball to shortstop Tashiro, who initiated the inning-ending double play.

"He had some spots when he had trouble, but he made some pitches big time," Ho said.

The Cougars padded their lead with four in the bottom of the sixth.

"I thought we were prepared," Kapolei coach Tom Ebanez said. "But (the Cougars) hit the ball. There's nothing else we could do. They played well."

Kapolei starter Sanchez only lasted five batters, departing after Meyer's homer. Kalani Omoto came to settle the game until the Cougars sent 10 batters to the plate four-run sixth.

"We made some mistakes on the field, but I told the kids, we when we're in the lead, we gotta be in control," Ho said.

Tashiro, Jaymes Kawashima and Wong all had two hits for the Cougars.

Shortstop and lead-off batter Kalani Brackenridge had two singles, a steal and scored the only Hurricane run.

Winners of today's quarterfinals advance to the semifinals and secure Division I state tournament berths. The losers will battle it out for the fifth and last state berth awarded to the OIA.

Campbell advances to a 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal game at No. 4 ranked Kailua.

Ben McQuown went 4 for 5 with a three-run homer, and the host Seariders (7-5) rallied from a 6-5 deficit with a 10-run bottom of the sixth to beat the Falcons (4-9).

R.J. Tacgere-Bailey added two hits for Wai'anae, which play play a quarterfinal game at Castle starting at 3:30 p.m.
